Comprehensive Oral Family Health (S.O.F.I.)

The Comprehensive Family Oral Health Program (S.O.F.I.) is a volunteer program created by the School of Dentistry in 2010 and aims to provide dental care to low-income patients in the Metropolitan Region.

The initiative was born as a result of the social concern of a group of UANDES dentistry students with the main idea of providing comprehensive dental care to family groups that have difficulty accessing care in this area. Annually and for a total of 14 years, the project has reached 400 patients between children and adults.

Our "UANDES Commitment" is to contribute to the improvement of patients' hygiene by educating and providing primary care through scaling and prophylaxis. Likewise, S.O.F.I, performs preventive measures such as the installation of sealants, fluoride and in the case of treatments, restorations are performed.

In addition, the entire service provided to patients is supervised by dental surgeons, which allows the delivery of quality care and the development of the project from an educational point of view, enhancing leadership and teamwork skills.

Diploma in Business Management for Microentrepreneurs

The program was developed by ESE Business School, together with the Nocedal Foundation, in 2016.

This is a program to promote micro-entrepreneurship, aimed at entrepreneurs who already have an initiative in operation and want to make it grow. At the beginning, the program was aimed at entrepreneurs in the municipalities of La Pintana, Puente Alto, Curacaví and Maipo.

This Diploma in Business Management for Microentrepreneurs aims to provide the necessary tools for participants (microentrepreneurs) to improve their knowledge and management skills in the different areas and functions of the company. For this purpose, classes and tutorials are given on different topics, such as accounting, finance, marketing and sales management, among others.

Since 2022, this program also has the support of the Alumni Council, who, together with its social area, wanted to join this initiative by providing personalized tutoring to the participants. The school's graduates were invited to join the tutoring program, helping the program participants to apply the knowledge acquired in the classes to their projects.

BIDIRECTIONAL COMMITMENT INNOVATION (BiCI)

The BICI project is an institutional initiative developed by UANDES and funded by the National Agency for Research and Development (ANID), whose objective is to develop and incorporate a "Research Engaged with Society" or "Public Engagement with Research" approach to the Universidad de los Andes and the CTCI ecosystem.

R&Dc is defined as "a two-way process of research and development in which researchers listen, understand, dialogue and collaborate with their relevant environment, thus ensuring that science and development effectively contribute to solve problems or address real and felt opportunities of the productive, environmental and social environment and generating an approach and appreciation of scientific work by the community".

The University has developed a strategy to incorporate R&Dc into its scientific work, which is based on six fundamental pillars:

  • Training in R&Dc, for researchers, R&Dc support professionals and graduate students.
  • Funding for R&Dc, through annual competitions focused on this area.
  • Mentoring for R&Dc, in which support is provided to researchers to address the link with society in their projects.
  • Recognition, which will be awarded annually to researchers who are considered leaders in R&Dc.
  • Ongoing evaluation, through a system of indicators that will make it possible to define institutional progress in the incorporation of R&Dc.
  • Permanent dissemination, as a way to inspire new researchers to incorporate linkage into their research.

Uandes Arts Museum

The Uandes Arts Museuminaugurated in 2010, was born from the philanthropic initiative of María Loreto Marín Estévez, who donated part of her private collection to the Universidad de los Andes, so that it could be researched, restored, conserved and exhibited to the public.

This valuable patrimony is composed of two types of religious art - sculptures, paintings and beacons of Andean viceroyalty tradition and icons in wood and bronze of Russian origin - with pieces dated between the 18th and 20th centuries.

A UNIVERSITY MUSEUM

The UANDES Museum of the Arts generates knowledge and research on the collections it holds, promotes scientific dialogue within its own academic community and collaborates with other study centers and museums.

At the same time, it is concerned with disseminating this knowledge to a wider public, thus acting as a bridge between the university institution and society, in order to transmit the appreciation of heritage to different generations.

He is a member of UMAC -International Committee of University Museums - under the International Committee of University Museums of ICOM (UNESCO) and of Global Consortium for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage (GCPCH)The Heritage and Heritage Network, an international network of universities, museums and research centers dedicated to heritage.

MEDIATION PROGRAM AND SERVICES

The UANDES Museum of the Arts is open to the public, with FREE ENTRYfrom Tuesday to Friday, between 10:00 and 17:00 hrs.

Through its mediation program, it offers guided visits, workshops and guided tours adapted to the specific needs of schoolchildren (elementary and high school), university students, senior citizens and people with disabilities.

Indoor air biopurifier

A high concentration of pollutants in indoor air, such as in homes and schools, can affect productivity and represent a significant social cost. Pollutants such as particulate matter, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) enter from outside and are also generated inside indoor spaces, for example, due to heating and engines. These substances can irritate the respiratory tract and some are recognized carcinogens. Episodes of severe air pollution, such as forest fires in summer or the use of heating in winter, have increased the demand for air purifiers in Chile and around the world. Keeping the air clean in our enclosed spaces is crucial for our health and well-being.

Since 2015, the Green Technology Research Group (G-Tech) of the Universidad de los Andes, has researched indoor air purification. He has focused on developing and testing systems that combine physicochemical and biological methods to treat indoor air. In particular, he has worked on eliminating mixtures of VOCs and PAHs from the combustion of wood, fossil fuels and other sources in homes, businesses and public places.

In 2018, he was awarded the Ramón Salas Edwards Prize from the Institute of Engineers of Chile, for his contribution to research and Innovation in Engineering.

The research has been carried out thanks to funding obtained in competitive projects:

- High Efficiency Integrated System for the capture and destruction of indoor air pollutants (UnitAir). FONDEF.

- Engineering a microbial community for the biofiltration of phenanthrene vapor biodegradation. Fondecyt Regular.

- Biopurification of Indoor Air: improving health, well-being and productivity. Pilot Scale. Stages 1 and 2.

- Study to improve the hydrodynamic design of indoor air biofilters at pilot scale. FAI UANDES.

These projects have been led by professors Alberto Vergara-Fernández y Philip Scottwith the participation of professors Patricio Moreno y Sichem Guerreroworking together with 3 international researchers.

In addition, the companies Tecsinox (https://www.tecsinox.cl/) Metropiping and Optima (https://www.optimaws.cl/) have collaborated in the development of these technologies through their participation in successive FONDEF projects.
